During the mid-nineteenth century, the center of American map publishing shifted from Philadelphia to New York, and few firms were more influential in that transition than G.W. Colton & Co. Renowned for their precision, elegant engraving, and decorative hand coloring, Colton's maps became some of the most respected and widely used cartographic works of the period.

This finely detailed map of Maryland and Delaware is an excellent example of the firm's craftsmanship. Counties are beautifully distinguished with contrasting pastel hand color, while towns, roads, railroads, rivers, and other topographical features are rendered with exceptional clarity.
