For this German translation of Pierre D' Avity's Les Empires du Monde, first published in 1614, Merian engraved a reduction of the map that he used for the Newe Welt... by Johann Ludwig Gottfried in 1631. This is one of the many derivative maps of the Jodocus Hondius, 1618. One noticeable difference is the altered perspective of the inset map of Greenland. Matheus Merian was not only a publisher but an accomplished engraver in his own right. Born in Basel, Switzerland, he spent most of his life in Frankfurt where he met and married Theodore de Bry's daughter. The map is also found in the later editions of 1646 and 1695. It accompanied other works of the period including the Theatrum Europaeum.
