This is a restrike plate from Views in Bootan, with the engraving based on field sketches by Samuel Davis. Samuel Davis (1760–1819) was an English soldier, artist, and diplomat who later became a director of the East India Company. During his time in the Himalayas, Davis produced numerous sketches that served as the basis for the illustrations in Views in Bootan, one of the earliest published visual records of Bhutan. He was also the father of John Francis Davis, who served as Chief Superintendent of British Trade in China and later as the second Governor of Hong Kong.
