The Boston publishing firm of Haskell & Allen was one of the principal rivals to the famous New York publisher Currier & Ives, and this charming print demonstrates why their work was so widely admired in the nineteenth century. Known for producing attractive and affordable lithographs for the American public, Haskell & Allen created images that combined strong visual appeal with skilled craftsmanship, making their prints highly collectible today.
Charles Haskell began his career as a picture framer and print seller, and by 1868 he was listed in the Boston directory as a partner in Haskell & Ripley at 18 Hanover Street. The following year he formed a new partnership with George F. Allen, establishing the firm of Haskell & Allen. In 1873 the business expanded and moved to 61 Hanover Street, reflecting the company’s growing success during the peak years of the popular print trade.
Although the firm prospered through much of the 1870s, financial difficulties eventually led to bankruptcy in April 1878. Despite its relatively short existence, Haskell & Allen produced a memorable body of work that remains appreciated for its lively subject matter, decorative quality, and important place in the history of American print publishing.
