Born in Salerno, Italy, Salvatore Pinto (1905–1966) became an important figure in the Philadelphia art community. Along with his younger brothers, Angelo and Biagio, who also pursued artistic careers, Pinto studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and was active in organizations including the Water Color Club, The Print Club, The Art Alliance, and the Barnes Foundation.

In addition to producing etchings such as this, Pinto worked across a wide range of media, creating wood engravings, murals, and drawings. He also designed sets and costumes for the Philadelphia Ballet and worked as a photographer for Curtis Publishing Company and in the motion picture industry.
