A beautiful hand-colored lithograph from the celebrated Verschaffelt series on camellia varieties, a landmark work of 19th-century botanical illustration comprising 624 plates published in Ghent between 1848 and 1860. The series was begun by Alexandre Verschaffelt in 1848 and continued by Ambroise Verschaffelt from March 1850 through its completion in 1860.

The plates were drawn by a distinguished group of botanical artists, including B. Leon, A. Lagarde, G. Severeyns, L. Stroobant, and P. Stroobant. Their richly detailed, hand-colored lithographs continue the tradition established by Jung's illustrations for Lorenzo Berlèse's Iconographie du Genre Camellia, published in Paris from 1839 to 1843.

A handsome example of fine 19th-century horticultural art, suitable for framing and display.
