Frederic S. Cozzens (1856–1928) — widely regarded as one of the finest American marine illustrators of the 19th century.
Sketching marine scenes as early as 1868, Cozzens became a prolific contributor to Harper's Weekly, the Daily Graphic, and Leslie's Magazine. Though celebrated for his yachting imagery, his true mastery extended across every class of vessel, from graceful sailing craft to the formidable ironclads of a modernizing navy.
These are choice examples from his celebrated series Our Navy, Its Growth and Achievements (1892), capturing the American fleet at the pivotal turn of the century. Each print depicts identified naval vessels , in harbor and on the open sea, rendered with the precision and authority that made Cozzens the era's preeminent maritime artist.
The meticulous detail lavished on both historic sailing ships and revolutionary steam-powered ironclads makes these prints as historically significant as they are visually striking. A superb acquisition for collectors of naval history, maritime art, and 19th-century American illustration.
