Buffon, the Comte de Buffon (1707–1788), was one of the most influential naturalists of the eighteenth century and a towering figure in European science. His celebrated Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux contains some of the finest bird prints ever published, admired for their delicate artistry, detail, and elegance.
Buffon believed there were between 1,500 and 2,000 species of birds in the world and was among the first scholars to seriously attempt to identify and name them. Created by Buffon and other talented artists, these engravings remain highly sought after for their beauty, historical significance, and timeless appeal to collectors and nature enthusiasts alike.
