Hortese Fern was born in New York City and studied under both Charles Webster Hawthorne and William Merritt Chase, whose artistic influence is evident in her work. Her etchings and lithographs have been exhibited at prestigious institutions including the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, the Museum of the Statue of Liberty, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford.

Her paintings have also been shown at venues such as the Graphic Sketch Club, the Lenape Club, the Barnum Circus Museum in Philadelphia, Cardinal Portrait in Rome, and the Republican Club in New York. Hortese Fern is also believed to be the same artist as the painter Hortense Fernberger.
