Original 17th-century engraving from the celebrated Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna, directed by the Swedish military engineer and statesman Erik Dahlbergh (1625–1703). This monumental work sought to document castles, cities, manor houses, and landscapes throughout Sweden and its territories, creating one of the most important visual records of Northern Europe during the Baroque period.
The view combines topographical observation with the dramatic theatricality characteristic of the era, reflecting Dahlbergh’s broader vision of presenting Sweden’s power, influence, and cultural sophistication. The plates were produced by a talented circle of engravers, many of whom were trained in France and the Netherlands, including Willem Swidde and Jan van den Aveelen.
Their exceptional command of fine-line engraving permitted remarkably detailed architectural rendering alongside expansive landscapes and atmospheric effects. As a result, Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna stands not only as an important documentary record but also as a major achievement of 17th-century printmaking.
