Born in 1888 in Cork, Ireland, M. Paul Roche (1888–1959) was an etcher, lithographer, painter, sculptor, and lecturer who later immigrated to the United States. He studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and at the National Academy of Design in New York before settling in Baltimore, Maryland. A member of the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, his work included a series of etchings of the University of Virginia and lithographs depicting Yale University.

This print is a trial proof from a series of eight etchings of Baltimore scenes published by the Baltimore Association of Commerce in 1927 and issued in an edition of 250 sets. The Baltimore Association of Commerce, the city’s principal business and civic organization, was formed in 1923 through the merger of the Board of Trade of Baltimore and the Merchants and Manufacturers Association. The latter had published Baltimore Magazine since 1907, a tradition continued by the Association along with various monographic reports on the city.
