Near the end of the long siege of Vicksburg, Union General M. D. Leggett's Illinois soldiers battled for the Confederate stronghold of Fort Hill. In this image, Thulstrup illustrates the volley of hand grenades and rifle fire exchanged during the long, bloody fighting between equally determined armies on June 25, 1863. With his dramatic portrayal of the flagbearer near the top of the hill, he signals the Union victory.

Thulstrup, born in Sweden, emigrated to Canada in 1872 and the United States in 1873, where he discovered his true vocation as an artist. Though he worked across genres, he found particular renown as one of the foremost illustrators of military scenes in America, bringing dramatic immediacy and meticulous detail to the most pivotal moments of the Civil War.

This print exemplifies the demanding art of chromolithography at its finest, each color applied through a separate lithographic stone, resulting in a remarkably nuanced and richly layered image. The result is a print of exceptional detail and refined coloration, capturing the smoke, chaos, and grandeur of battle with a clarity that few other printmaking techniques could achieve.
