Presenting a stirring depiction of the Battle of Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia, June 27, 1864, the last major engagement between the armies of General William Tecumseh Sherman and General Joseph E. Johnston before the decisive battles for Atlanta. This magnificent chromolithograph was first issued by the esteemed Boston firm of Louis Prang, then later reissued by the American Lithographic Company, attesting to its enduring popularity and historical significance.
Thulstrup, born in Sweden, emigrated to Canada in 1872 and the United States in 1873, where he discovered his true vocation as an artist. Though he worked across genres, he found particular renown as one of the foremost illustrators of military scenes in America, bringing dramatic immediacy and meticulous detail to the most pivotal moments of the Civil War.
This print exemplifies the demanding art of chromolithography at its finest, each color applied through a separate lithographic stone, resulting in a remarkably nuanced and richly layered image. The result is a print of exceptional detail and refined coloration, capturing the smoke, chaos, and grandeur of battle with a clarity that few other printmaking techniques could achieve.
