Among the most acclaimed American etchers of the early twentieth century, Dwight Case Sturges studied at the Cowles Art School in Boston and first worked primarily as an oil painter. Around 1910, however, he turned almost exclusively to original etching, a decision that quickly brought him widespread recognition. His finely executed prints earned numerous honors, including awards from the Chicago Society of Etchers and the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco.

Sturges was an active member of several prominent arts organizations, including the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Canadian Society of Etchers, the Concord Art Association, and the American Federation of Arts. Today, his works are held in the collections of many major institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the New York Public Library, the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Fogg Museum, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Library of Congress.

During the 1920s, Sturges developed a strong international reputation for his atmospheric figure studies and landscapes. His original etchings were published by the influential Kennedy Galleries on Fifth Avenue in New York, typically in editions of 100 impressions or fewer, adding to their desirability among collectors. These refined and highly detailed prints were exhibited widely in both England and France, helping establish Sturges as one of the leading American etchers of his era.
