Brown, the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon provided food, drink, rest, and supplies to Union troops passing through Philadelphia, a vital rail and steamer hub. Unlike the later Sanitary Fairs that aided wounded soldiers, this early effort focused on the needs of healthy new recruits. By September 1861, a hospital wing was added to care for sick and wounded troops. For four years, the Saloon operated through generous donations of food, clothing, and cash, later supplemented by admission fees to view the captured Confederate naval ram in 1863. The Saloon closed in late 1865, having served countless soldiers during the war. James Fuller Queen apprenticed in lithographic draftsmanship and went on to produce an extraordinary body of work for Philadelphia's leading printing houses, including Wagner & McGuigan, Thomas Sinclair, and P. S. Duval. His portfolio encompasses city views, buildings, scenic attractions, portraits, sheet music covers, magazine illustrations, and diplomas. Regarded as one of the finest chromolithographers of his era, Queen's depiction of the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon stands as his most complex and celebrated work. He later produced the lithographic view of the United States Sanitary Commission Fair in Philadelphia.

Why This Piece Matters: This chromolithograph is a visually compelling document of civilian wartime philanthropy and 19th-century Philadelphia. It represents a pivotal moment in both American history and the art of color lithography. Surviving impressions in good condition are increasingly scarce, making this a desirable acquisition for collectors of Civil War ephemera, Philadelphian, and American lithography.

An important, display-worthy piece of 19th-century American history.
